Europe Day 29: Lemoncello

Today was spectacular.

I woke up in time for breakfast and enjoyed yogurt and granola.  Our hostel serves plain yogurt, which my house generally uses for sour cream; it is a gross thing to have for breakfast. But, the granola has chocolate chunks in it! If you swirl them around in the bowl long enough, the white yogurt takes on a brown hue, and it tastes absolutely delicious.

I read my book for a while before heading out to go shopping with Kayla.  I bought some white ballet flats. I did not have any dainty and cute shoes with me and I have desperately wanted some. The kind shopkeeper must have liked me, because she sold them to me for 10 euros, while the price tag said 13.  While I am looking my white shod feet I am suddenly eight years old again, wearing a floral Easter dress.  My white dress shoes are scuffed, but the little heel outweighs all other faults.  I have my purple purse at my side, and cling to my Adventure bible in its black case with a gem stone angel.  Who would have thought white shoes could bring such memories?

Our lunch portions were much smaller than we anticipated, so we got gelato afterwards to make up for it.  Snickers, chocolate and Kinder candy scoops were piled precariously on a cone.  Eating the fast melting gelato is an art form.  One must continually swoop their tongue around the bottom half of the cone, or else it will drip all over the place.  The few moments it took me to pay were enough to send streams of delicious flavor down my hand and around my wrist.  I soon recovered, and manged to only drip once on the exposed part of my foot, though fortunately missing my new white shoe.

A cool sea breeze blew us back to the hostel where we watched a few episodes of Lost in the wonderful furniture in the lobby.  These couches truly are amazing for their immense depth and plethora of cushions.  Even now I sit here, deep in my seat and surrounded by pillows-the moment I can afford to be picky about my living room furniture, I am buying a couch like this.

I soon got ready for dinner, and sat once more in the comforting lobby furniture to read my book as I awaited the rest of the group.  Ten of us soon left for a restaurant on the water.  We hoped to sit on the pier, but the wise waiter seated us in doors.  His reasons, spoken in Italian, soon became obvious as dark clouds rolled in over head and a persistent wind blew the flags outside.  Paired with the twilight sky, it was much like the scene in Pirates of the Caribbean where the Black Pearl first arrives in the harbor.  Cannon fire could even be heard, in honor of some Italian holiday.  I searched for the black sails on the horizon, but the dark clouds were coming from inland, and no pirate flag could be seen.

Despite the lack of fencing, eye patched law breakers, dinner was delicious! I ordered spaghetti with clams, and we were all surprised to recieve a multiple course meal.  Plates of bruschetta were laid before us.  The crunchy bread was covered with tomatoes, olive oil and seasoning, and really rather delicious.  I really enjoyed it, even though every time I took a bite, I got tomato juice and olive oil all over my nose.  My spaghetti and clams were also delicious, though I think I prefer my pasta softer than it is traditionally cooked; but who am I to argue with the creaters of the noodle?

After we finished our meal, we were each given a short glass of lemoncello.  Sorrento is famous for it.  When the beverage is in your mouth it tastes okay, but the after taste is very similar to a cough drop.  Had we been given a bigger glass I would not have finished it, but given the situation I was determined.

After all was said and done, Kayla and I went to the beach to dip our toes in the water one last time.  Tomorrow we leave for Switzerland, and I do no know when I'll get to touch the Mediterranean again.  I must say that I shall dearly miss Italy, its flattering men, lighthearted shop keepers, and delicious gelato.  If only I spoke Italian, I would be content to stay here much longer.

As usual, since we are leaving the city I do not know what the wifi situation will be in our next location.  We've been luck to have it so far-I only hope the trend continues!
