Who cares that we just ate dinner? Kayla, Jade and I were determined to get a crepe.
We hopped the metro and crossed the Seine near Notre Dame. It took a little searching, but we soon found a place offering crepe's to go. The "walk up" window looks directly into the kitchen, and we watched this man make crepe after crepe in quick succession. I successfully greeted the chef and requestsed "un crepe beurre et soucre, s'il vous plait." (butter and sugar crepe, if you please)
A pre-measured amount of batter hit the grill with a sizzle. The Chef used a tool shaped like an upside down "T" and swirled the batter to an even thickness, making a large circle. A precise flip, a dollop of butter, and a sprinkle of sugar later, my fingers burned a little from the triangle of heaven I held in my hand. A slight crunch of sugar, the crisp exterior of the crepe, and the homey goodness of butter; all together delicious.
Our little trio walked along a particularly special bridge crossing the Seine. Here, newly wed couples come and attach a lock to the rail on the edge of the bridge, then drop the key into the water. The locks have names written, and sometimes engraved on the surface. In this way, they represent their love for each other forever. So many people have done this over the ages that the railing has had to be replaced! Some of the locks featured yeras and dates, showing how long they had been together for.
Music drew us further up the Siene and we enjoyed another set of street performers on brass instruments. They were likely students like us, and I cannot help but wish I could make so much money so quickly, armed with a few friends and some instruments.
Finally, we strolled past Notre Dame once more. The sun had long since set, and the walls and windows were light with pale lights that gave the beauty of the building an entirely new look. It is so obvious that tourists are not the only ones who enjoy all France has to offer, as hundreds of people continued to linger on the street.
At long last we returned to the metro and puttered our way back to the hotel, utterly satisfied. Delicious food, romantic sights, playful music and delightful company; what more could be asked for?
It sounds so amazing sweetie! I am glad you write these blogs! I love you! Mom
